Due to the length of the sessions our band of merry pranksters used, most episodes will be quickly followed by the next one. At the end, you will also find a short debrief from episodes 7 and 8. When we started this Kids on Bikes campaign, all we knew is that we each wanted to game, and we wanted to do so with a consciousness towards how character development in RPGs, can play into a bigger picture. The bleed into the game and the bleed out are kind of amazing to watch. If you want real echoes of yourself, create a podcast in which you take all sorts of chances. This game was played during the pandemic and it brought the 4 of us, (5 if you count Sally), a lot of joy. We hope that our game does this for you as well. Last year, Brian, Josue, and Woody got to have a very enlightening discussion with Allen Turner; creator of the game Edrighor. The sound is a little off at times, but this one could not be left in the can as it is too important. Allen was a gracious guest and offered us lots of jumping-off places in our discussion. Please go check out his website and blog and then buy a copy of Edrighor! https://council-of-fools.com/blog/ehdrigohr-rpg/ The post Edrighor with Allen Turner appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
This is the 6th episode in our Cricket Falls story. Initially these were supposed to be a separate podcast, but as it felt that it fit in with the overall tenor of Rolling for Change, we figured we would shop it here first. The podcast when it does have a home, will be called Shrinks on Bikes, an homage to the fact that those of us playing are all mental health professionals. We play for fun and we play to learn about ourselves and our process. You can’t very easily claim that you know the therapeutic uses of an rpg without at least first embedding yourself in that system. So we did. You dear listeners are the fortunate, because you get to see the process. It is growth for us all, and hopefully as entertaining for you as it was for us The post Cricket Falls 6 appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
The backlog of episodes for Cricket Falls is pretty large, but I am working to crank out at least 1 a week. For those who missed the first episode, this was my first attempt at creating a narrative rpg. I used the Kids on Bikes system due to its rules lite nature and the very useful structure for developing story and relationship. It is still one of my favorite systems, and it gives us all a chance to be kids, or at the very least contact some childhood trauma. The production of the show is a little bit garage band. The players are happily clicking away, clocks are chiming, chairs are squeaking. Where possible this has been edited. Despite the bumps and issues, we are presenting these live plays because we had a great time with them. They got each of us through perhaps the most challenging part of the pandemic. We also each got a chance to explore and process our experiences as we went along. Where possible, we are providing those debriefs, but they won’t be in every episode. Many of our meetings were 3-4 hours long, and debriefs were at the end. So when there is a debrief it will be at the back end of the episode most likely. We hope you are enjoying this crazy little adventure. Keep on role playing for change! The post Cricket Falls 5 appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
This conversation between Kris and I happened back in June of 2020. We were in lockdown, wondering what would happen next. Well, what happened is Rolling for Change went silent for a while. However, now Rolling for Change is rising again. On the heels of our amazing TAGGS gathering, Rolling for Change rose back up from its slumber and tapped at the door of consciousness. My guest this time around is Kris Johnson. Kris uses board game pieces to make works of art. I myself found him when he posted on one of the board game groups I follow. It was a remake of the “Black Lives Matter” fist symbol. I ordered a t-shirt almost immediately. I knew that if someone was doing what he was doing with board game pieces, that was a story I wanted to cover on Rolling for Change. As it turns out, Kris is also an art teacher and he uses games with students at school. Kris is yet another example of how board games can impact our lives and the lives of others. If you would like to check out his work or connect with Kris, I am providing the links below. Rolling for Change returns with the next episode of our Cricket Falls play-through. This episode was originally close to 3 hours long with debriefing, so we broke it into 2 sessions. Thank you for listening. The post Cricket Falls Episode 3 appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
It has been some time since we have presented you guys with something new. We were on a brief hiatus so that yours truly (Woody) could start a new job and 2 more just to be safe. However, we will start getting those episodes out again as quickly as we can. Today, we return to Cricket Falls for the second episode of our Shrinks on Bikes podcast. Perhaps later in time, this podcast will have its own feed, but for now, RFC is the best outlet for this stuff and if you do not want to listen to a play through, I promise we will have new RFC episodes in the next few weeks. Best wishes to you all. The post Cricket Falls Episode 2 appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
In this episode, Josue and I meet with Adi Singal, a good friend, and now the producer of his own Hebrew board game review channel. In English its called Victory Point. Adi talks about what brought him to making his Youtube Channel, his love for linguistics, and of course games. Here is a link to see Adi’s channel for yourselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbawdIniF0E The post Victory Point w/ Adi Singal appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
As we started our social distancing and lockdown experience, Tim Grant, Brennan Jordan, Brian Quinones, and myself (Woody Harris) started a game of Kids on Bikes both as a way of helping me get used to Gming, and as a way of passing our indoor time. We had the notion that this story would play out as a podcast. This is the first episode of that strange adventure. We are going on 16 weeks of this story now. It has been an immense learning curve for me as GM, but mostly it has just been an incredible joy to participate in story collaboration with these guys. Although this may eventually find a different home than Rolling For Change, I wanted anyone who is interested to get a listen to this crazy story. As a new GM, I think what is amazing is how the improvisation and worldbuilding played out. There are certainly some logical inconsistencies, and we may mess names up here and there, but as a tool for understanding the potentials in an RPG, I think it was a rather amazing event. I don’t think I would have made it through our social isolation with much sanity left were it not for spending time with these guys. I hope you all enjoy it and I look forward to feedback and input. That title is a very simplistic picture of the discussion Brian, Josué, and Woody had with Sarah Lynne Bowman. In this interview with Sarah, we discussed how role-playing can have transformational potential. We discussed creating games and environments with intentionality and the benefits of using a game as a container for vulnerability and personal growth. Bringing her vast experience of role-playing, her background in psychology, and her understanding of the games we play, Sarah shows us a depth hidden in the games we play that we are rarely aware of. It was truly an honor to be able to have this discussion, and it will likely send ripples into the future of RFC and my own trajectory through gaming. It will do that for you as well. However, what is offered here is just the tip of a very deep iceberg. Be sure and visit sarahlynnebowman.com for more details about Sarah’s work. Role playing has been a pretty common area of discussion for Rolling for Change in recent times. The fact is role playing is one of the most open ended mechanics in gaming, allowing for exploration of self, group dynamics and processing of conflict. It really is one of the most malleable tools we have in terms of formalized play. Our guest in this episode, Rabbi Menachem Cohen discusses how we can further extend that malleability to spiritual development. You can find out more about his work at http://whatmakesyoucomealive.net/ But before you go there, go ahead and listen to our discussion. Menachem offers some really amazing insights with regard to personal growth and spiritual progress through gaming. In this episode, Woody and Josué discuss using games for educational purposes with Erica Sanders from FunAgain games https://funagain.com/pages/ashland-retail . We discuss how the pandemic has impacted the board game industry and also how we can still find ways to have fun in the midst of a global crisis. One thing I really enjoy about Rolling for Change is getting the opportunity to talk with so many amazing gamers and therapists. Every person offers a new doorway and perspective on how games make a difference in our lives. I reached out to Sophie Berkley because she was featured in a new article that spoke of using games in therapy. The discussion that came from this, opened up a new way of seeing games, thanks to the lens of synergetic play therapy. In our discussion here, Sophie, Josue and myself (Woody) discussed so many aspects of play therapy and how games have a role in therapeutic process. It was a thoroughly enjoyable discussion and I hope that it opens you to yet another understanding on the impact of gaming. In this episode of Rolling for Change, Josue and Woody talk with game designer Mads Floe about his print an play game Vaccine. Mads made this game available to others as a free print and play to help us have something to do during our social isolation and quarantining. Mads talks about how the game was created, the impact that social isolation is having on him, and his understanding of viruses and how they impact his game. Today on Rolling for Change, Brian and I get a chance to talk with Hawke Robinson, founder of RPG Research and RPG Therapeutics. Admittedly, we had some sound issues about 1/4 way in, but it takes nothing away from the interview. Hawke talks with us about the history of his research and company, and how RPGs can be used as therapeutic tools. Hawke also takes us on a short ride through his history with role playing. Hawke calls it a firehose of information. We agree, prepare to get blasted. In this episode Brian interviews Adelle about her first time playing a role playing game. This is a discussion about Adelle’s experience with Kids on Bikes. Brian discusses the benefits of role playing and explores its impact on Adelle. Its a great discussion and perhaps it will give you insight into how role playing games allow us to roll for change. Afterlife: Wandering Souls is a role playing game set after death. The game offers 2 key characteristics that caused it to be brought to our attention: 1) It deals with the discovery of lost memories as well as spiritual discovery of your character, and 2)It offers a great sand box for creating stories and allows for multiple worlds in one system. Woody had a discussion with creator Elizabeth Chaipruditkul about the inspiration for the game, and the potential uses of such a game in teaching us about ourselves. We feel certain that you will want to go out and buy this game following this discussion. https://www.angryhamsterpublishing.com/product/afterlife-wandering-souls/ The post Afterlife: Wandering Souls w/Elizabeth Chaipruditkul appeared first on Rolling for Change - Geek Therapy's Transformative Gaming Podcast .
