Sorelle Sessions #2 is here! Emma is in Rome, Carla is on the Gold Coast. We hit record on the chat we would have had anyway. No script, no plan, just sisters catching up. Grab a coffee (or a spritz) and enjoy! In this episode: The full play-by-play of the Tuscan wedding menu, from the aperitivo to the never-ending courses to the cake. Why Emma wore her Year 12 formal dress (bought at 17, worn again at 38) and why it looked even better this time. The sisters' teenage hair eras, thanks to one very persuasive hairdresser in Canberra. Radicchio, breadcrumbs on baked veggies, and other Italian kitchen tricks worth stealing. Dance floor lifts, near misses by the pool, and the group chat wedding song. Carla on life with a toddler and a newborn. Sorelle Sessions Italian lessons, how to actually say Fiumicino, and the best pizza al taglio near the airport (called Sancho). For extended Europe stays, car lease option. Why Emma regrets not making the Puglian wedding bigger (but the 40th birthday party idea that might fix it). Links mentioned: The Tuscan wedding food. The dress! Worn at 17 and 38. Join us on the mat Whether you're in Rome, on the Gold Coast, or somewhere in between, MerryBody is your home for Yoga, Pilates and meditation. Welcome to our very first episode of the Sorelle Sessions! I am (Emma) in Rome (well, Rocca di Papa, a town just outside of Rome), Carla is on the Gold Coast, and we thought, why not hit record on the catch ups we'd be having anyway? No plan, no script, just the two of us talking about what's really going on. Grab a coffee or a spritz, depending on your time zone. In this episode we chat: Italy vs the Gold Coast: 11pm piazzas full of kids vs cafés closing at 2pm, and why Italians don't need a name for "the third place" The real cost of living comparison: €2 chicken Marylands, €7 pizza and €4 spritzes vs $22 spritzes and $26 margheritas back home. Why we chose to buy a little house in Italy instead of renovating in Australia. The ongoing cost of living crisis, small business closures and the hard part of being "in touch with reality" without being consumed by it. Parenting from Instagram: praising effort over "you're so smart," and the "you can walk or mummy carries you" trick that actually worked on Denny. Postpartum recovery done properly the second time: rest, the recovery pants Carla swears by, and why the "bounce back" pressure does more harm than good. Why we'll never sell MerryBody with before and after photos, even though it would probably make us more money Mum at 68 doing 2 to 3 classes a day and racing Denny down the flying fox. This is what MerryBody is for. Resources mentioned: Emma's blog post on her pituitary gland tumour diagnosis, read it here! The skincare Carla is loving (not sponsored): Froya Organics. The film Emma watched on the plane: Hamnet MerryBody snack size classes, the physio-approved sessions Carla is easing back in with: sign up to a 7 day trial! Got a question for next week's Sorelle Session? Italy, small business, Gold Coast life, Yoga, Pilates, teacher training, anything. Send us an email or a DM and we'll add it to the list. And if you have a sister, send her this one. Apparently Harvard says it's good for you. Join us inside MerryBody Yoga, Pilates and meditation classes you can do at home, in your PJs, in 10 minutes or 60. No before and afters, no bounce back pressure, just movement that makes you feel good and keeps you strong enough to run down the flying fox at 68 *( you will get this reference when you listen!). This one's a wild ride (literally!). In this episode Carla shares her Leo James birth story for the very first time... and it could not be more different to her first birth with Denny. What started as a calm morning of contractions at home turned into a very speedy, very dramatic dash to the hospital… and baby Leo arrived in the car, right out the front of the hospital, with an audience. The hypnobirthing breathing, the birth affirmations, the M1 traffic drama, and the rip... and recovery that followed. A reminder of just how amazing the female body is. (Please note: this episode includes detailed descriptions of childbirth and bodily fluids.) In this episode: This birth was very different to the first birth with Denny Why she wanted to avoid an induction and go into spontaneous labour The tools that helped: the TENS machine, pranayama breathing, hypnobirthing and birth affirmations Recognising the "I don't want to do this anymore" transition moment The dramatic 13-minute drive, Gold Coast drivers and waters breaking in the car Leo's arrival in the car, a BBA (Baby Before Arrival!) — right outside the hospital The tear, the stitches and Carla's speedy recovery Why the second newborn bubble has felt so different (in the best way) What a birth story! We'd love to hear your thoughts... come say hi over on Instagram or send us an email. Ready to move, breathe and feel good in your body? Well, we're on a roll! With baby number two still keeping us waiting (any day now!), we've squeezed in another podcast, and this one goes everywhere (as usual haha). We start with the bump update and Carla's wild nose job saga (two surgeries, a skin graft from her bum, and a two-year swelling situation no surgeon ever warned her about). It turns into a real conversation about why we've normalised changing our faces, and how a society so obsessed with "fixing" bodies got this far from self-acceptance. Then we dive into Off Campus, th show everyone's talking about... and what it's teaching us about emotionally intelligent men, healthy relationships, and supportive friendships. We get into men's mental health, the pressure to "achieve" and s much more! Heads up: we briefly touch on suicide and men's mental health in this episode. Please skip or come back to it if you need to. A few things we chat about: Plastic surgery is never "just" a procedure. Carla's story is a real reminder that surgery is major, healing can take years and the before-and-afters never tell the whole story. Our bodies are meant to change... bloating, puffiness, swelling, all of it. Recognising it as completely normal (periods, pregnancy, travel, being human) is so good for us. Off Campus is displaying emotional intelligence, its leading men celebrate the women in their lives, hold space for feelings and show us what supportive, healthy relationships can actually look like. Men's mental health matters... so many men were raised to bottle it all up, and creating safe spaces to feel and talk can literally save lives. Money won't buy happiness (but we keep having to relearn it!)... chasing achievement and external validation is part of life... but real happiness and wellbeing comes from within (as long as you have the essentials). Stuff we mentioned: Off Campus — the hockey-romance series on Prime Video, based on Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus books (starting with The Deal) Coop on YouTube — the creator whose plastic surgery reaction videos kicked off the chat. He's so funny! Probably the coolest and most decent Gen Z guys we've seen online. Admittedly we don't follow many (haha). Emily in Paris — on Netflix A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas — our current Romantasy obsession (no spoilers… mostly haha) "Boys" — the upcoming book on raising boys we mention, will chat more about this soon. Episode 444 — Ozempic, Botox & binge eating Episode 443 — our Romantasy book recommendations Before you go… Next time you're feeling puffy, premenstrual, or just plain over it, press play on a Yin Yoga class and feel the magic. That's exactly what MerryBody is for... Yoga, Pilates and meditation you can do anytime, anywhere, without the external pressure to look like anyone else but YOU. Start today! Ever get that feeling that everyone else has it all figured out and you're somehow running late on your own life? In this episode we chat about that "I'm so behind" feeling... the milestones we think we should have hit by now, the comparison spiral, the endless should-be's and the ancient Yoga practice that helps us let it all go: Santosha, or contentment. We chat about why fixing one thing only ever reveals the next thing to fix, why acceptance isn't toxic positivity (it's simply letting things be as they are), and how true contentment comes from the inside out, not the outside in. We talk through money fears, relationship timelines, the "good life vs good day" reminder, and how shifting your energy, shifts your results. In this episode: Why the "I'm behind" feeling is so universal, and a little pointless once you really look at it Santosha (contentment + acceptance) and why it's a daily practice, not a one-and-done How acceptance isn't positivity, it's letting reality be as it is, so you can move through it with less suffering Releasing the "should-be's": milestones, money, relationship timelines and everyone's different path "Don't get so obsessed with a good life that you forget to give yourself a good day" How shifting your energy and mindset shifts your actions, and your results Why diving into Yoga philosophy ripples out into every corner of your life Mentioned in this episode: Santosha — the second Niyama, contentment, from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali The Daily Guide to the Yoga Sutras by Susan Fendler Eddie Stern's One Simple Thing Steve Jobs on connecting the dots looking backwards Byron Katie's "Is it true?" question Episode 444 — our binge eating, Ozempic + Botox chat Our earlier podcast episodes on the Yamas & Niyamas Ready to go deeper? This week we're getting real, honest and a little bit ranty. We share OUR opinions, they could be against yours, or maybe you resonate? We chat about how we got through our own binge eating (and for one of us, bulimia) all those years ago. We bring this topic up again because lately it feels like the world is swinging backwards. The body-acceptance era we lived through seems to be disappearing, ultra-thin is back "in" again, with Ozempic and Botox everywhere we look. We share what actually helped us heal the binge eating: letting go of restriction, eating the pasta, moving our bodies from a place of acceptance instead of punishment, and slowly learning to trust ourselves again. We chat about the pressure women feel, why a moving, expressive face is such a beautiful thing and how ageing is a privilege. In this episode: Why we're revisiting binge eating now and why it matters more than ever How restriction fuelled our binge eating and the years it took to unwind it The magic of eating without guilt and trusting your body's natural rhythm Our honest thoughts on the Ozempic + Botox, and the pressure around it Why a moving, expressive face is beautiful... and why ageing is a privilege How our Yoga practice and self-acceptance, along with pasta made life so much better! Mentioned in this episode: The Blue Zones, where some of the longest-living people enjoy olive oil, fresh bread and big plates of veggies. We chat more about them on episode 192 HERE. An older podcast episode on binge eating, episode 91 (worth a listen). This episode is our personal story, not professional advice. If you're struggling with food, eating or body image, please reach out, in Australia, the Butterfly Foundation is there to help on 1800 33 4673. So much of our healing came back to our MerryBody practice, Yoga, Pilates and meditation that's all about moving with acceptance, not punishment. We're back, two episodes in a row (look at us go!), we're chatting all things reading: why fiction is its own kind of self-help, how a good book is the ultimate antidote to endless scrolling, and how we are in our romantasy genre era. We really didn't do this topic justice, just getting back into the groover of podcasting. We get into reading as a presence practice (hello, kind of a meditation), why doing things just for the joy of it is so underrated. And a little tangent on why a business needs a whole lot more than money to feel successful. Plus, of course, all the books we've been reading. Key takeaways: Fiction is self-help in disguise. Stories help us process emotions, build empathy, shift perspective and feel less alone, often more enjoyably than a stack of "become a better you" books ever could. Reading is the perfect scroll-stopper. When you're deep in a story, you're participating, not consuming, which is why a book leaves you restorative instead of drained like an Instagram-to-TikTok spiral. It's a beautiful presence practice. If silent meditation feels hard, reading a chapter before bed (phone in another room!) is single-focus, calming and great for sleep. Let go of needing an ROI on everything. You're allowed to read, paint, or learn purely for the joy of it. Not every activity has to "better" you or make money, and that includes how you approach learning. Don't knock the "cliché" books. Romance and romantasy aren't lesser reads. They're fun, human and absolutely worth reclaiming (and yes, Fourth Wing is worth the hype x 100000). Resources & books mentioned: My Brilliant Friend series – Elena Ferrante Women Who Run With the Wolves – Clarissa Pinkola Estés Fourth Wing (The Empyrean series) – Rebecca Yarros A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR), Crescent City & Throne of Glass series – Sarah J. Maas The Seven Sisters series – Lucinda Riley Zodiac Academy series – Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti (I kind of put this down but it's actually so good!!) The Ascended , Riftborne & Duskbound – Greenwich & Lennox Mile High / The Windy City series – Liz Tomforde The Poisoned Daughter (standalone) Alphabet Weekends – Elizabeth Noble Confessions of a Shopaholic – Sophie Kinsella Off Campus (book-based series) Kayla Books – Canadian book reviewer on Instagram (good recommendations) Got a book rec for us? Get in touch, we'd love to hear from you! Read for the joy of it. Move for the joy of it. This whole episode is really about doing things for the sake of doing them, not because of what you'll get out of them. And this is kind of similar to our ethos with exercise too! How do we have a mind of our own in the world of AI? What even is real or AI? We chat about the rise of AI-generated content and the impact of influencer culture. This is what we spoke about during the episode AI-generated influencers are looking more and more realistic, especially when they mimic everyday “normal” online life. Crazy we know! How influencer culture affects people's choices more than they realise, from shopping to self-image. Slowing down, practising presence and questioning trends help you stay true to you. Fashion trends create sameness. How to practice critical thinking and stay connected to your own values instead of just repeating opinions from your feed. Yoga, meditation, presence and how slowing down helps you connect to yourself. Stay informed but notice media bias. How we use AI in our business while still keeping our own creativity and ideas. Welcome back to week two of our podcast comeback! In this episode, we're diving deep into something you've been asking about for ages: how to teach yoga online. We're taking you behind the scenes of how we create our MerryBody online classes. Mic issues, sister fights on set, and all the real talk about what it takes to film Yoga and Pilates classes! This is what we spoke about during the episode We looked back on our very first online class recordings in 2018 and reflected on how far we’ve come since then, both in confidence and production quality. Feeling comfortable, confident and connected with your videographer makes such a big difference when you're filming online classes. We follow the one-take rule and approach filming like we're teaching in person, which keeps everything authentic and seamless even when we fumble, miscount or say left when we mean right. Our filming setup includes five cameras, professional lighting and lots of natural light because it creates the most beautiful look for our classes. Our monthly themes guide everything we create, from class titles to the actual movements we choose. We broke down our full production workflow from start to finish. We're brainstorming the idea of creating something to help other yoga and Pilates teachers build their online offerings, so let us know if that's something you'd be interested in. It's been 6 months! Can you believe it. But we are back! And excited to be back. This episode is literally a sister chat, we have no idea if anyone will get to the end of it haha. But you know, we hesitated a moment before hitting publish then thought... no we have to publish it! It's been 6 months after all! So here we go, episode 439 on the Get Merry Podcast Show! This is what we spoke about during the episode We built an online Yin Yoga course (we are running it right now, and yes, it's amazing!). We ran the 2025 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Cohort. Another beautiful cohort! We went to Italy for a month with the whole family, Emma got married in Martina Franca! And yes, we are actually planning next week's episode! In this episode, we take inspiration from the iconic “Mean Girls” scene where the Plastics nitpick their flaws. We chat about self-criticism, body image, social media comparisons and how to choose a path of self-acceptance instead. If you're sick of those thoughts... "all the things wrong with me" kinda thoughts... tune in! This is what we spoke about during the episode Social media and influencers affect the skincare culture which leads to young girls wanting anti-aging products. How do we welcome in less comparison and judgement, and more peace, more acceptance and joy? Practising self-acceptance daily is a reminder of the truth that you are amazing just as you are. This is why we created MerryBody. You can't just practise self-acceptance in the moments where you need it. If you put a pause in between that self-criticism thought, it allows you to add reasoning and questioning of that thought. Carla just laughed off a comment about her postpartum belly. That's self-acceptance! Self-acceptance doesn’t mean complacency. It means taking care of yourself holistically, not just being "thin" or what the world thinks you should look or feel like. If you're not yet a MerryBody member, sign up for the 7-day trial not just to exercise daily but also to practise self-acceptance. If you loved this episode, share it with friends and family. This week we ran a Chakra Workshop and decided to publish it to our podcast. During the session we chat about the 7 main Chakras, where they are within the body, what they're linked to in regards to emotions, spiritual and physical. The highlight of the session is a guided colour visualisation to welcome balance and awareness of each of these energy centres. Then we finish the session with a short Q+ A about our upcomoing Yoga Teacher Training! If you enjoy this chat and it's sparked a big curiosity, our Yoga Teacher Training 2025 could be a great next step for you. Our very last early bird session is now live! This is what we spoke about during the episode Chakra translates, in Sanskrit, to wheel or disc, they are also known as energy centers. Each of these energy centres corresponds to different aspects of your life. The Base Chakra or the Muladhara chakra (red) is right at the base of the spine and represents our safety, our stability, our physical needs, and how grounded we feel. The Sacral Chakra or Svadhisthana (orange) is our Chakra just below the navel that's linked to our creativity and emotional health. The Solar Plexus Chakra, or Manipura (yellow), is located in the upper abdomen and is linked to your inner power, confidence and self-discipline. The Heart Chakra or the Anahata chakra (emerald green or pale dusty pink) is right into the center of your chest and is linked to love, compassion, and connection for yourself and for others. Vishuddha Chakra or the Throat Chakra (blue) is linked to the idea of speaking up or speaking your truth. The Third Eye chakra, or Ajna (indigo), is linked to your intuition or inner wisdom. When you are balancing your third eye, you will trust your intuition and feel like you have a very clear mind. The Crown Chakra or Sahasrara (bright light white or violet) is also known as the Thousand Petal Lotus. You'll feel connected to something greater when this chakra is balanced. Experience the beauty of colour visualisation in this Chakra workshop! From the base of your spine to the crown of your head, embrace the vibrant life force within and feel more centred than ever before. We answer some of your Yoga Teacher Training questions. In this episode, we dive deep into the concept of Yoga Sutra 2.33 Pratipaksha Bhavana. But really, we go on all kinds of tangents! From global issues like Gen0cide and climate change, to bringing self-awareness to our own reactions and letting go of control. And also! We are running this FREE workshop soon! During the workshop, you will learn how to tune into your body, mind, emotions and energy with your chakras! We invite you to a chakra workshop happening on the 16th of April. We're going to go through each of the chakras and talk about how you can balance and align each of them in a very practical way that will help drive self-awareness and focus your energy. Hop on the waitlist for our Yoga Teacher Training 2025 to sign up for the masterclass! This is what we spoke about during the episode When you're overwhelmed by negative thoughts, choose to cultivate the opposite. But just like everything in Yoga, this is a practice. It doesn't just happen. Pratipaksha Bhavana is a tool that helps you stay in alignment to the Yamas and Niyamas. Listen to our 10-part snack-sized Yoga philosophy series on the Yamas and Niyamas . The wild world we’re living in and how it’s affecting our mental and emotional state. The emotional rollercoaster we all ride and how Yoga philosophy helps us stay grounded. Nischala Joy Devi’s translation and interpretation of Pratipaksha Bhavana helps to change your attitude rather than hoping to change the situation or the people who cause you to be unhappy. Anand Mehrotra's translation talks about how Sutra 2.33 is all about practising the Yamas and Niyamas. When you find yourself uncertain and terrified by life, use your tools and bring Ishvara Pranidhana into your consciousness. Surrender. Powerful reminder: you can’t control others, but you can choose your response. Navigate anxiety by welcoming in excitement for your life. Yoga Sutras are wonderful tools and constant companions to guide you and help you move through life. If you loved this episode, share it with friends and family. In this episode, we chat about the importance of intentionally making time for the things you love and the experiences that fill your life with joy and meaning. Because life is not a forever thing! This is what we spoke about during the episode Emma had dinner with a musician friend and talked about whether or not he should keep playing. Money is really important, and so is feeling joy; sometimes, how you make money does not bring joy. Do you allow enough time for the things that light you up? We don't live to work. We work to live. Planning trips and adventures with family, even if inconvenient or costly, can add richness to your life. It's important to not let ambition consume you so that you miss all the other important things you love. The practice of Yoga is not about changing your body. It's about changing how you perceive the world around you and how you live your life. The ultimate lesson inside the Bhagavad Gita is "show up, do the work, and do the work for the sake of the work itself, not for the fruits of the action". We are so excited about our upcoming Breathe and Meditation Masterclass! Hop on the waitlist for our Yoga Teacher Training 2025 to get the invite! This is what we spoke about during the episode Every year, every wrinkle is a blessing. Celebrate the aging process! We grew up with the pressure of needing to be thin and obsession with dieting that really impacted our health and lives negatively. That's why we began practising and devoting our time and life to self-acceptance. Carla recalls her botched nose job experience. Listen to Episode 298: this is why I regret my nose job . Are cosmetically altered and botox faces the 'new normal face'? Lack of facial expression as a result of getting Botox is an extreme issue in regard to children developing emotional intelligence. There are too many potential side effects of Botox from mild to moderate pain, droopy eye lids and even death (yes it's stated on the risks!)! Is the smooth face that doesn't move really worth it when you can get all these risks? If you find yourself feeling like you have to get Botox, check in with yourself. Who are you surrounding yourself with? Because not everyone in the world is getting Botox even though it may feel like they are. There are other alternative self-care practices such as lymphatic massage using the gua sha. You can also go to an infrared sauna, but nice skin care. Beautify yourself in whatever way you want, but also acknowledge that we can't stay a certain way forever. Do some research and consider the pros and cons of Botox. You can practise self-acceptance through Yoga, Pilates, and meditation. That's what we do! Remember that you are amazing just as you are! If you loved this episode, share it with friends and family. In this podcast episode, we chat about how to get through the lows of life. After all they are natural and part of life, perhaps it's more about embracing low emotions instead of resisting them. Plus we chat about the small daily rituals that we do to help us get through the lows of life. Also! We are so excited about our upcoming Breathe and Meditation Masterclass! Hop on the waitlist for our Yoga Teacher Training 2025 to get the invite! This is what we spoke about during the episode There's a cyclone warning on the Gold Coast, which is very unusual. Accepting the lows as a natural part of life is going to help us get through the lows. When you can't change something, the only thing you can control is how you deal with the situation. Embrace what is. You don't have to embrace it and like it. Embrace it and be in it, live through it, and get through it. Something that you love unconditionally, like a pet, helps you move through difficult emotions and allow healing. Having connections and people you can lean on is another way to deal with low emotions. Meditation, Yoga and Breathwork are all ways to help you get through the lows of life. Exercise is not just about physical strength. It helps you go through all the feelings. If you loved this episode, share it with friends and family. We're excited to be back in our recording chairs, or as in Emma's case, the floor! After a brief hiatus, we're hitting play on a series of new episodes. In this episode, we chat about the impact of everyday actions on life's direction. How the days make up the weeks, the weeks make up the months, the months make up the years... and the years make up the life. This is what we spoke about during the episode Consistent small steps lead to dreams becoming reality. Connect to your heart. Yoga, meditation, or going out in nature helps you reconnect to yourself. With screen time and distractions all around, it's important to create a dedicated space and time to tune into your true desires and create actions that align with your heart. Big goals, dreams and ideas, without action stay ideas and dreams. Failure is part of the journey. It's not about never failing, but always learning and allowing the failure to lead you to the next thing. Are you working on any passion-filled or bliss-filled pursuits? If you want to share part of your story with us or if you loved this episode or have more questions about this, we would love to hear from you, send us an email to carla@themerrymakersisters.com or emma@themerrymakersisters.com or message us at our Facebook and Instagram accounts @themerrymakersisters.
